A new analysis from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, which looked at the top 250 domestic grossing movies of 2014, found that only 5% of women were represented as cinematographers. This analysis, The Celluloid Ceiling, shows a continuous gender gap in the highly competitive film industry that is male-dominated. Although cinematography has often been thought of as a “man’s job”, there are still several women who are following their passion for working with cameras. This presentation, shown through research and filmed interviews with both women and men, examines the reasons as to why there are so few women cinematographers in the industry, the potential barriers that women face, and how we can encourage more women to become cinematographers.
