This essay/dissection aims to pin down the process by which journalistic methods can be applied to the creation of performance-poetry. Given the subjective/personal nature indicative of creating poetry, this essay will present insights into the author’s creative-process, cross-sectioning those with examples of the tried-and-tried methodology of writing articles within the journalism medium. To accomplish this, this essay will chart the process of the author’s creation of a specific poem centered upon the subject of singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston; this essay will detail the research and fact-checking the author conducted to create a factually-correct poem that is still functional within the medium of performance-poetry. If time/space allows, the author will also attempt to create a poem based on an event current to the time of this thesis’ presentation.
