As biotechnology continues its rapid expansion, American society is confronted with new and unique bioethical dilemmas. Throughout the history of cinema, science fiction films have addressed ethical issues and societal fears associated with new technologies. This research explores the ways in which genetic engineering is portrayed in the entertainment industry (as a theme or a plot device) in comparison to how biotechnologies have advanced and are being applied in real life. As successful large-scale genetic advancements in the scientific communities gain publicity, genetic research consortia respond to clarify fact from fiction in regards to their work.
